ENGPASS [Hindrance]

The exhibition ENGPASS will take place from the 26th
June to the 17th July 2003 at the gallery Barakk,
Berlin (Germany).

For the occasion, the six artists involved in this artistic project pivot on questions regarding the structures and the contexts of violence on a political as well as on a micro-social level.

Among the pieces presented, a video-installation portrays some apparently harmless fireworks. Still, its aesthetics remind the effects of contemporary media images. Related to it, another video captures how some buildings are insistently searched by the lights of a police helicopter. n the frame of the dichotomy public / private spaces, a photographic work is displayed dealing with a real estate failure. The raw structure skeleton, imposing its presence at a crossing in the centre of Berlin, is contrasted with painted studies on parts of the human body.

Several room sculptures have been specially created for the gallery. One of the exhibiting spaces will be barred by a nearly-cubic three-dimensional object. It is transparent and inflatable with dimensions slightly inferior to the space hosting it. Its transparency wrongly hints at the space's accessibility and openness. In the hall of the gallery, the ceiling lighting will be intervened on. The lights will be lowered of nearly 20 cm, reducing their original height to 2.20 metres. The aim is creating a claustrophobic space in which the feeling should not be immediately related to the intervention on the ceiling.
The room is linked to another work, where, at the end of a narrow corridor, the viewers find themselves approaching a mirror. Confronted with themselves, they discover the mirror being semi-transparent, revealing a projected room behind the surface.

The gallery Barakk was founded in 1999 in order to provide young artists with exhibiting space. The gallery is located at 12, Dorotheenstrasse, Berlin.Before being destroyed during WWII, the Collegium Hungaricum -the Hungarian centre for research and scholarships- once stood in the same lot.

Today, the gallery Barakk works with the Hungarian Centre of Culture in Berlin and the organisation Förderband. It is conceived as a space dedicated to experimental art, dealing not only with history and integration but, as well, with the articulated space offered by the gallery itself. It already presented works of artists coming from several countries of Eastern Europe, Angola, Holland, Austria, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The exhibition ENGPASS will gather work of Dirk Uhlig and Jens Lüstraeten (Berlin, Germany), Alberto Barreiro and Coca Rivas (London, U.K.), Ellen Bornkessel (Cologne, Germany) and Stefanie Kiwitt (Leipzig, Germany).

ENGPASS™ [Estrechamiento]

La exposición ENGPASS™ tendrá lugar del 26 de junio al 8 de septiembre de 2003 en la Galería Barakk, Berlín (Alemania).

Con ocasión de este proyecto artístico, los seis artistas investigan en las estructuras y los contextos de violencia en lo cotidiano, desde un punto de vista social y político.

Entre las obras presentadas, un vídeo retrata unos fuegos artificiales en su aparente trivialidad. La estética empleada sugiere los efectos mediáticos de las imágenes actuales. En relación directa con el trabajo anterior, se encuentra otro vídeo en el que unos edificios son repetidamente violados por las luces penetrantes de un helicóptero de la policía. Parte de la exposición tratará de la dicotomía espacios públicos/ espacios privados. Un trabajo fotográfico retrata una desastrosa inversión inmobiliaria que impone su presencia en un cruce en el centro de Berlín.

Se le contraponen unos estudios pictóricos sobre partes del cuerpo humano. Algunas esculturas de la exposición han sido especialmente pensadas para la Galería Barakk. Una sala estará cerrada por un paralelepípedo transparente e inflable de dimensiones poco inferiores a las del espacio que lo alberga. Su transparencia sugiere, de manera errónea, accesibilidad y abertura. En el atrio de la galería, se ha planificado una intervención al techo que será rebajado de unos diez centímetros; el alto original se reducirá a 2,20 metros. De esta forma, se quiere conseguir un ambiente claustrofóbico que no sea claramente atribuible a la intervención llevada a cabo.

La Galería Barakk fue instituida en 1999 para ofrecer un espacio expositivo a jóvenes artistas. La galería se encuentra al 12 de Doretheenstrasse en un terreno en el que se hallaba, hasta su destrucción durante la segunda guerra mundial, el Collegium Hungaricum, un edificio que albergaba el centro húngaro de investigación y asignación de becas. Hoy, la Galería Barakk colabora con el Centro Húngaro de Cultura de Berlín y la organización Förderband. Se propone como espacio para la presentación de obras experimentales que se enfrentan artísticamente con el espacio ofrecido por la galería misma, además que con historia e integración.

Hasta ahora, la galería ha exhibido piezas de artistas provenientes de numerosos países del Este de Europa, Angola, Holanda, Austria, Inglaterra y Alemania. La exposición ENGPASS™ presentará piezas de Dirk Uhlig y Jens Lüstraeten (Berlín, Alemania), Alberto Barreiro y Coca Rivas (Londres, Inglaterra), Ellen Bornkessel (Colonia, Alemania) y Stefania Kiwitt (Leipzig, Alemania).
